About

The Saint Alfege Lodge was consecrated on 24th May 1924 and so will be celebrating its centenary in a little over two years time.  It was founded largely by members of the Borough of Greenwich Lodge No 2332 (our mother lodge) at a time when Freemasonry was particularly popular, and some lodges simply became larger than was practical.  The Borough of Greenwich lodge was one example of this and so a splinter group was formed to set up a daughter lodge and hence the Saint Alfege Lodge was born.

Like the Borough of Greenwich Lodge many of the early Saint Alfege Lodge membership were associated with the river Thames being watermen, barge skippers etc.  In keeping with this connection and the importance of Greenwich to these occupations the name for the new lodge was taken from the main church of Greenwich ie Saint Alfege Church.

The Saint Alfege Lodge has met at a number of places over the years including a long period at the Old Sessions House, Clerkenwell.  It now meets at Mark Masons Hall, St James’s London.  There are four meeting all on the third Saturday of the month in February, April, September and November. All meetings are concluded by a meal together in one of the Mark Masons Hall dining rooms.

We are a small, very friendly lodge and our members are varied in age and professions. They became freemasons for a variety of reasons, many by introduction of a friend or out of curiosity. All however remain because of the camaraderie they enjoy with the other brethren.

Those who have become active members of the lodge and have chosen to grow in Freemasonry have done so because they enjoy it and the challenges and the fellowship which the Order offers.

The form and working of the lodge offer members a framework for companionship, teamwork, and the enjoyment of a shared experience.
